8 Tips to Organize Your Workspace

Do You Have a Cluttered Office? Here Are 8 Tips to Organize Your Workspace

Have you been feeling stressed or unfocused at work lately? You may be taking longer to complete your assignments, which can cause even more work to pile up, and leave you feeling more stressed than before.

Take a second to look around your workspace. Do you have piles of clutter laying around? That may be causing the problem.

A cluttered office makes us feel stressed by distracting us, providing excessive visual stimuli, and reminding us that we have a never-ending pile of work to get through.

However, there’s an easy way to solve this problem, declutter your office. This may seem like a big feat to accomplish, but taking just one day to reorganize your office can help you feel better and work more efficiently.

Do you want to know how to achieve this? Check out these 8 tips to organize your workspace.

  1. Identify Areas of Extreme Clutter

First things first, you have to decide which areas of your office need work. There may just be one big junk drawer, a chair covered in old papers, or maybe your whole office needs to be decluttered.

Once you’ve identified what areas need to be cleaned, set some time aside to get it all done at once. Decluttering a little at a time doesn’t always work, as many people just end up moving clutter from one area to another. Another problem is as soon as someone declutters one area, they run out of motivation to finish the job.

  1. Put Everything Away

The best way to declutter your office at once is to put everything away in a box. Clear off your entire desk, your floor, your drawers, anywhere with clutter buildup.

You should just be left with a clean desk and a box (or several) of clutter. Continue to go about your work. As you need things, pull them out of the box and put them back on your desk. At the end of the week, look through what’s left in your box. Throw away, or convert to a digital version, any old papers as well as anything else that you don’t need.

If you find some things that you won’t need regular access to but you have to keep, like records or client files, set them aside. Commit to buying a filing cabinet or contact a document storage or document scanning company, to keep them off your workspace, and out of the way.

  1. Invest in a Desk Organizer

You’ll probably still be left with tons of papers that you need to look at regularly, but a desk organizer will at least keep them organized. Workspace organization is vital in keeping these papers from cluttering up your desk in the future.

There are plenty of desktop folder organizers, so you can keep these papers neatly stacked in one area of your desk. While you’re at it, consider investing in a desk drawer organizer, so you can keep your drawers decluttered too!

  1. Keep Separate Folders

Have you ever found yourself wasting too much time searching for that one paper you need? Sometimes it’s not enough to just have a designated spot for papers. You need to also organize that area, so you can easily find the papers you’re looking for.

There are a few ways to do this, but the easiest is to purchase some folders. Make sure to label the folders and consider color coding them for the best workspace organization. If you have too many papers to organize, consider asking your boss to go paperless so everything can be stored on your computer.

  1. Take Advantage of Your Space

One reason clutter builds up is because there just isn’t enough space to put everything. While you probably can’t expand your office, there are ways to make the most of the space you have.

Instead of placing sticky notes all over your monitor, consider hanging a bulletin board on the wall. If you have a giant desk calendar, opt for a smaller one to hang on the wall or a smaller planner book to keep in your desk drawer.

If you have an empty windowsill, you can use it to place your stapler or pencil holder to get it off your desk. You may also consider purchasing a filing cabinet to put in the corner to get files off your desk or use a small end table to move the printer out of the way.

  1. Hide Your Wires

Loose wires can make it look like you have a cluttered office even if you’re very organized. Those pesky wires just pop out everywhere and gather in a giant mess.

There are several wire organizers that you can purchase to unclutter office space, or you can try some DIY wire hiding hacks. Even something as simple as binder clips can be used to keep those wires in order.

  1. Have a Special Place for Assignments That You’re Working On

As you move through the day, you might notice that the assignments you’re working on get spread around your desk. People may place new assignments on top of current assignments, and all of this leaves your desk looking cluttered.

For that reason, you should have a special place for current assignments. If you need to stop working on an assignment for the time being and start another, put the old assignment back so it doesn’t take up room on your desk.

Some people even like to have a special place for incoming assignments. You may talk to your boss about document storage or scanning documents. It’ll save in printing costs and lessen the clutter for everyone.

  1. Straighten Your Desk Up at the End of Every Day

Alright, so you’ve taken a day to declutter your office and improve your workspace organization. You’re all done, right? Wrong.

Unfortunately, clutter tends to creep up on us every day. In order to maintain a clutter-free area, you’ll have to dedicate some time at the end of the day to straighten up.

Don’t worry though, this will likely only take a few minutes if you have been keeping up with it. Before you head out, throw away any old notes that you don’t need, put all your papers and folders away, and make sure everything is in its proper home on your desk.
